unable to change viz 'Style' (color, size, shape, etc.)

I uploaded a new dataset ('Permits by month') and visualized it. I choose an attribute to display ('category') and encode 'all unique values' - of which there are 5 represented - using either 'Default' or 'Autumn' palette. So far, so good.

BUT I can't change the 'icon' for my data-points: I right-click on the 'icon' and get the 'Style Picker' pop-up menu (colors, shapes, sizes, etc.), but after clicking 'OK' the attributes remain unchanged. (FWIW: I can switch back and forth between Default and Autumn, and I do see changes. It's only when I try to modify color, etc., that it fails to work as designed.)

    John,

After you tried to change the style, did you click to refresh the map above? Just want to make sure I'm clear on your sequence to reproduce it.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Yes, I clicked on 'refresh' (meant to mention that).
    Thanks!

Thanks for letting us know that you're having a problem! I really appreciate the number of details you put into your report. It definitely helps us diagnose the problem.

However, I haven't been able to reproduce your error. If I visualize all points, or visualize an attribute (such as well type) I'm able to click on the icon underneath the selection bar and alter the colors without an issue.

First, I want to make sure I'm looking at the right dataset. This is it, right?

Also, could you tell us what browser you are using? I'll try to match your user-experience as much as possible.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi, Alison,

    WOW! - I see something I hadn't before....

Here (attached) is a screenshot of what I'm doing. (You do have the right dataset; but - when I clicked the link you sent me, it has a different attribute selected for the map.)

NEW NEWS: My 'problem' ONLY occurs on the attribute I'm using: 'category'. If I switch to, say, 'client id', the Style Picker works as I expect.

In the screenshot, I've (right-) clicked on the 'Jan '11' icon - which is a tan square, size 10 pixels. Now I choose blue, diamond, 5 pixels, and click 'OK'. When I refresh the screen, the icon is unchanged.

By the way, I've made extensive use of this function in the past; so I'd like to think that I know what to expect (but, maybe I'm missing something). I have found, for example, that upon refreshing the map it sometimes takes a few extra seconds for the new icons to appear - during which time the 'old' icons are populating the viz. But I've waited for that to happen this time, and it doesn't.

I have used several browsers: IE 9, Firefox 4, and Chrome 11, with the same result.

Thanks for the follow-up. It was just what I needed to reproduce your issue! Thanks!

I'm looking into what's causing this and I'll get back to you once we figure out what's going on.

Again, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

    Hi John,

My guess is that the problem is a bug on our side. I believe that we are mishandling the values with apostrophes in them. A workaround until we can fix the bug would be to re-upload the dataset with the category values set as "Jan 2011" instead of "Jan '11".

Meanwhile, I'll open a bug in our internal issue tracker.

    Sorry for the inconvenience!

    Mike

Thanks, Mike! (I have a simpler workaround in mind.)

I'm having a very similar issue on another dataset...in my case, it seems to only apply to fields that are categorized as "date".

I'm having a very similar problem on another dataset. In my case, it is only on a field that is categorized as "date", such as "violation year".

    http://data.fractracker.org/cbi/dataset/datasetPreviewPage?uuid=~01...

It does classify them, but I am unable to change the scheme. Unlike John, however, it doesn't even pretend like it is going to let me; it just says "Null".
