Joining two datasets

Can you give me an example of the kind of data joining you want to
do? Insight supports a simple way of using a previously imported
dataset's shapes when importing a new dataset (for example, suppose
someone imports the boundaries of all the counties in the U.S. Later
on, someone else could import their own statistics for those counties
without having to include the shapes again --- they could just link to
the existing county shapes.)

There's a Knowledge Base article about that:

http://support.rhizalabs.com/kb/importing-data/adding-geographic-information-to-a-dataset

(Though right now it looks like the hosting company for our support
site is having trouble displaying images, which makes the article less
than informative.)

As for the private work groups, which site is it for? CBFN? I need
to check to see if that site is licensed for private work groups...

    Mike,
Thanks for your response. I just checked the link you sent and that should definitely work. In terms of the working groups the site is for CBFN. Thanks again for your help.

    Mike,
I have the master data set turned on and have the unique identifier set as FIPSAB. However, when I try to link or join another csv file that I am importing, there is no prompt in the "select geographic attributes" drop down that lets me match to an existing dataset. If you need to put a cap on all of my questions I totally understand and thanks for your help!

Don't worry; we live to serve ;-)

Let me first answer the private workgroups question. The CBFN site is licensed for 20 private workgroups. To create a new one, log in as the admin user and click on "My Home". There should be a link called "Manage Private Groups" on that page. That will take you to a new page where you can create your new group.

Once your group is created, you will want to add users to it. Find the user in the system that you want to add and click on them. In the action menu on their user page, you'll see an "Add to Workgroup" item. Use it to add the user to the workgroup. You may also want to designate one or more users as workgroup admins. Once a user is part of a workgroup, the option "Make workgroup admin for" shows up in their action menu, and you can make them an admin. Workgroup admins can add and remove users from the workgroup.

To restrict content visibility to a workgroup, you must choose to restrict it when it is created! Once a piece of content is public, you can't make it private. (If you accidentally make something public that you wanted to be private, delete it and start again.) You can make datasets restricted to a workgroup when you import them, and you can make snapshots restricted to a workgroup when you create them.

You can always make a private piece of content public later, but it's a one-way street. (As you can see, the system is biased toward making content public.)

Can you send me the CSV file you are trying to import and I'll see if I can figure out what's wrong with the join? (Joining datasets can be finicky: the keys have to match exactly, and they have to be unique.)

As always, if you have ideas about how some of these more advanced features can be made more usable or understandable, let us know.

    Mike,
Thanks a lot for the help with the work groups. I have attached the files I am trying to join. Basically the one is a county shape file that shows all of the county land segments with a FIPSAB. The other gives the county name with the FIPSAB. This FIPSAB unique identifier is used across the board with most of the Chesapeake Bay Program's air, land, and water data. Basically if we can join these two, we have a county data set where I hope I can add any type of air, land, and water information by county through use of the FIPSAB code. Thanks again!
    Best,

    -John

There's a duplicate row in the the CSV file for FIPSAB A42029. I took it out, and it looks like it's happier now. I've attached the revised file. The keys have to be unique in both the base dataset and the new dataset (we've been talking about possibly relaxing this constraint, so you can have non-unique keys in the new dataset... let us know if that would be useful. Two records could wind up with the same geography, but sometimes that makes sense.)

Oh, a possible issue that you should be aware of: you can't join a new dataset to a dataset that was itself joined to a previous dataset. So, if you upload this CSV file and join it to your original shapefile, you're not going to be able to make the resulting dataset a master as well.
