Snapshot Question

Hello,

I have some questions about the Snapshots. What we have been doing is
creating Snapshots, making them public and posting the links to a
website for clients to look at. The Snapshots are live so if the data is
updated the links will also be updated, correct?

Is it possible to add more data layers to a Snapshot? Or do I have to
create a new Snapshot when I want to add more layers, delete the old
snapshot and change the links on the website?

We are working on an Invasive Species report and want to show the data
that we have collected thus far and be able to add new data as we
collect it.

It would be very helpful if there was a method for updating Snapshots.

Thanks,

Garrett Devier

    Garrett,

There are two ways to update a live snapshot.

    1. Replace the Datasets Associated with the Snapshot
The first way to update a live snapshot is to replace the original datasets used in the snapshot with new datasets, which means indicating that they are replacement datasets up front during the import process. As long as the structure of the dataset is the same (no changes to the field names and no new field names) the live snapshot will update automatically to reflect the new replacement data that was uploaded.

    2. Make your Datasets Editable
You can add data to existing datasets using the editable datasets feature. Data can be added row by row and when the new dataset is published it automatically replaces the last version of it, which means your live snapshot will automatically display the new data.

If you want to add entirely new datasets to a visualization, you will need to create a new snapshot.

One of us would be happy to talk you through these options tomorrow - just give us a call and we can walk you through a couple demonstrations online.

    Thanks,

    Maryl

Just a few things to add:

Yes, a live snapshot will automatically display the current data for all datasets it uses. Datasets can be updated in the ways Maryl described. So, you can make a single snapshot, post the URL, and the data will update automatically to reflect new revisions of datasets.

If you want to add new layers to your snapshot (whether new or different style rules with your existing datasets or new datasets), you will need a new snapshot. One snapshot captures a specific "look" of a map (colors, datasets, etc.), so altering that means a new snapshot.

Here are a couple of tips when making multiple snapshots:

First, given that you already have a snapshot you're happy with and want to add to it, you don't want to start over from scratch. Choose "base a new visualization on this" while viewing the snapshot -- this will take everything in your current snapshot and clone it into an editable map. From there you can change anything you'd like and then save a new snapshot.

Second, once you're in the editable map, you can make multiple snapshots showing different things if you'd like. You can think of the editable "visualization session" as your working document, and snapshots as saved revisions from it. For example, you can display 3 datasets and save a snapshot. Then turn on 2 additional datasets and change some style rules and save another snapshot. You can even save your working session to your own library to come back later if you're not ready to save any snapshots.

It is true that each snapshot has its own unique URL, so if you make a new snapshot and have your old one linked somewhere, you will need to update that link.

    Hope this helps.

I'd like to mark this query as resolved and make it public so other users can view the response. Is this OK with you?
