Making your First Map

There are two ways to make a map. You can create a map directly from a dataset or you can base a new map on an existing snapshot

This tutorial is about creating a map directly from a dataset.

First, select the dataset you want to visualize. From the dataset page, you will see a button that says Visualize.

You then will be taken to the the Visualization Tool where you can determine which elements of the dataset you want to display on the map.

From the drop down list, select the attribute you want to visualize on the map and set your parameters. Depending on how the data was typed during import, you can display data as simple points, shapes, lines or as heat maps. You can set rules that determine if data is displayed as a all values, or on a linear spectrum or a graduated spectrum. You can also set thresholds to display items based on setting a value above, below or equal to a certain number.

Next, you can use the style picker to set your colors, shapes, transparency and more.

Click the Refresh Button Refresh_Button.png

And you will see your data visualized on the map.

If you are the owner of the dataset, you can save this map as the Default Style for the dataset so anyone who loads the dataset will see this map first, when they click visualize.

To set the Default Style, click on the Action Menu associated with the dataset

Then choose Save as Default Style from the dropdown menu

To save your map so it can be shared with others, create a snapshot.

Select Create Snapshot from the Action menu above the map

Then give your snapshot a title and description

Live Snapshots
You should decide whether the snapshot is live. If you know there will be ongoing updates to the underlying dataset(s) and you would like the map to always reflect the most current version of the data, check the Live box. If you would like your snapshot to reflect a view of the data at one point in time, regardless of future changes to the underying dataset, do not make your snapshot live and leave the Live box unchecked.

Public vs. Private Snapshots
You can make your snapshot available to all users of Rhiza Insight or you can save your snapshot to a private workgroup. If you want to restrict your dataset, select the appropriate workgroup from the drop down list. If you want to create a new workgroup, contact your administrator.

Save to Collection
Your snapshot will always be available from your Library, but sometimes it is also helpful to save snapshots to a specific collection, to make it easier to find. Select the Collection you want to save it to on the dropdown menu or choose the option "create a new collection" from the same menu.
